Tamil Nadu started the Cadaver Organ Transplantation Program in the year 2008. This helped to bring a definite structure to the process of organ donation and transplantation. It brought into picture a simple and clear procedure to recognize and certify brain dead patients. Next, an online registry for the recipients was set up. This registry is used by both government as well as private hospitals for reporting brain dead patients as well as the possibility of potential recipients. The Tamil Nadu Police also introduced a ‘non-stop thorough-fare’ for the vehicles that are transporting vital organs from one part of the state to another. This is called ‘the green corridor’.
The success rate of the organ donation campaign in Tamil Nadu has inspired other states to follow its lead and adapt their wonderfully designed organ donation model.
